Subject: Waterslide Design Request for Propo$als
INTRODUCTION
The 2008 CIP has $100,000 identified for the replacement of the waterslide. Staff is
proposing that City Council authorize Requests for Prop~sals for research and design of
the Aquatic Park waterslide replacement. I
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
The waterslide was constructed in 1985 and has exceed1ed the typical life expectancy of
20 years for an outdoor waterslide. Portions of the slide pre brittle and there are several
seams that have needed repair. i
The City has identified several projects to enhance the Aquatic Park this year including a
new support building, upgraded concessions area, bike racks and picnic tables, proposed
sand playground area, proposed diving board replacement, and proposed shade
structures. The CIP identifies funding in 2008 to replace the water slide.
In initial correspondence with different waterslide design firms, we have learned that new
waterslides can vary in price significantly, based on the design and heightof the slide. In
order to complete a draft of the CIP prior to Mr. Themig's departure, we will begin working
on the 2008-2012 CIP in April.
In order to have good numbers for the CIP, we need to obtain replacement design options
for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and City Council to review as part of the CIP
process. Therefore, we need to retain the services of a consultant who can analyze the
existing waterslide and waterslide systems (structure and footings, pump, controls, etc.),
and prepare preliminary replacement options and cost estimates. If Council chooses to
move ahead with one of the options, they would then order more detailed plans and
specifications.
Therefore, we are requesting authorization to seek proposals that would take a two-
phased approach for the waterslide replacement design services:
Phase 1: Review of existing slide and options/costs for replacement.
Phase 2: Plans and specifications, bidding, and construction administration
The proposal would be drafted such that if City Council chose to not follow through with
Phase 2, we would be under no obligation to the consultant for that work.
