Summary: 1.What are the some of the issues for economic development along the 101 Corridor through downtown and on the east end of the community? • Decorative piers on sidewalks block visibility(especially when pulling onto 101 by El Toro-hard to see west) • Include the west end • Free parking ramp like downtown Edina's 50th and France would help • Pedestrian Bridge across 101 to Huber Park • Figure out a balance of businesses needed downtown and market to them to open businesses • Bring in business to fill spaces • Upgrade housing around downtown(1"st to 4h Ave) • The east end is becoming a parking lot-too many car dealerships give the image of vacancy-not enough to support the area. Solution:more businesses on East end. • I would like an implementation of growth for West Side • Roads and Traffic • People just drive thru and don't stop at businesses often enough • We need more retail business • Lack of continuity; some properties are in disrepair and others are ok. • Lack of a Vision for the corridor • Empty buildings not bought up • Lack of destination businesses • Poor customer service in downtown 123 North Third Street,Suite 100,Minneapolis,MN 55401-1659 Ph(612)252-7140 Fx(612)338-6838 Shakopee 101 Corridor Marketing Plan Open House Comments Memorandum October 23,2013 Page 2 of 3 • Increasing traffic to new businesses • The train horn! It is irritating, loud, interferes with daily business and residents' daily enjoyment for miles around. If this requires$50k and a speed limit I KNOW the residents would pursue it. • Vacant buildings, problems accessing and parking near walking trails. • River is too shallow at the boat launch. • Empty storefronts • Spencer& 101 traffic-getting in and out Holiday and crossing 101 • Setting up a business in Shakopee is a regulatory nightmare! 2.What do you see as the strongest assets of the 101 Corridor? • Our town's history;which is never included(Native American history and gangster history) • Old downtown buildings&appearance • 1"Ave did,and are doing,a great job-side streets need upkeep and growth. • Shakopee's historic core downtown • The Riverfront and its park • Still only 30mph so visitors and residents can see businesses • Mobility • Future 4 lane 101 remodel • The riverfront and Huber Park is an asset to the district as a whole • Beautiful buildings, the river,Huber Park, the bridge to nowhere, the bike trails and prospective trails • River, walking trail, town heritage all bring a sense of community back to the residents. • Turtles and bike trail 3.What strategies or ideas do you have to improve the business climate for the 101 Corridor in both the near and long-term time horizons? • Old-time grocery store like we used to have—Beren's Bros with great fresh meat and deli • Housing near downtown-upgrade to help downtown • Empty&unused storefronts and buildings need to be filled using incentives if necessary • We are a town of entertainment-let's build on that • West end plan that would draw the Renaissance and Valley Fair,Canterbury traffic to come into town. • Multi-business signage on the outskirts to direct traffic to the downtown • Use fun`events' as a specific draw-music,craft beer, art, quilting. • Seasonal events such as Christmas,Octoberfest/beer,blues/music and food festivals at the pavilion.Perhaps a combination that includes Rahr, music, food, cars • Use the River-improve access across 1S`Ave to the park • Let visitors know they have"arrived"in downtown • Better signage recognizing local businesses • More retail, especially women's retail and coffee shop • Dream BIG-Stick with it and reap the benefits-we could be more like other successful downtowns • Strategic vision of what the corridor should look like • Add a grocery store that people want to go to,such as Whole Foods or Trader Joes • Add a drug store • We need businesses to draw young new families to the area • Make planners accountable Shakopee 101 Corridor Marketing Plan Open House Comments Memorandum October 23,2013 Page 3 of 3 • Keep promoting community events to keep consumers coming to the area • We need new`kitchy',fun businesses in downtown, such as a wine bar,art gallery, small theatre, gift and antique shops,a small book store,co-op,fun small restaurants • `Young',energetic,med-high end retail with something different about each one. Artistic, authentic and each an experience to visit. • Diffuse the resentment and anger-how do you engage people who have been hurt, feel left out, can't give the big dollars? How do you build a good team from downtown? • No more little pockets of retail areas throughout the town, get people out of their cars, walking form business to business.A movie theatre next to a variety of shops and restaurants. Develop "river walk"community. Restaurants on piers overlooking rivers, camping and recreation arts& entertainment. • Open up access to the river • Unblock parking to downtown and local businesses • Give the high rise communities a safe way to walk to doctors, groceries, medical care and supplies, pharmacy, restaurants, postal services and hair salons. • Farmers market on bridge or somewhere downtown • Brewery • We need a grocery store and antique stores • More restaurants and a deli • Holiday decorations that you can actually see and which would unite the designated downtown corridor • Shuttle service 4.General comments • Thank you • As owner of Riverside Liquors 507 E.First Ave I am experiencing good business and would like to see my property left alone • Thank You! • Why all the empty businesses buildings in the I"Ave corridor? I view it as a sign of disease. • I would like to re-engage if you'll have me. Shauna Ruthenbeck/Paul's Bicycle Repair;limited time but absolutely want to help things change. • Don't turn Shakopee into a series of park and ride locations that cause people to come, park, then leave town on busses as fast as they can. • Do not stuff residents on westside and industry on the east. • Do not make Hwy 169 commuters skip over industrial are before hitting downtown and homes. • There is hardly a historic district-they tore it down a long time ago P General Business 6 SHAKOI'EE • TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill,City Administrator FROM: Lori Hensen,Deputy City Clerk DATE: 10/23/2013 SUBJECT: 2014 Budget Discussion(F) Action Sought I—.._ —11.11.1.1..-l— ._ _...
