SUBJECT: Payment to the Scott County Meth Task Force (A)
Action Sought
The City Council is asked to offer a motion authorizing payment of$1,500 from the Shakopee
Police Department drug forfeiture fund to the Meth Task Force for drug prevention presentations
in the Shakopee School District.
Background
The Meth Task Force has been committed to educating our youth in areas of drug abuse and
prevention. The Meth Task Force continues to provide students with anti-methamphetamine and
anti-gateway drug information through presentations of CLIMB Theater. Last year, CLIMB
Theater rewrote their presentation to include heroin.
The current cost to conduct these presentations in the Shakopee School District is approximately
$9,000. The $1,500 from the police department's drug forfeiture fund would go to off-set some of
those costs. City Council authorized the same contribution in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
The Meth Task Force has surveyed teachers after these presentations. Past results show that 97
percent of teachers found this program to be of value to the students. The Shakopee Police
Department feels there is significance in these presentations, and we believe they are making a
difference.
Recommendation
Staff recommends approving the requested action.
Budget Impact
The funds requested will come from the police department's drug forfeiture fund. Funds exist to
support this action.
Relationship to Vision
This supports Goal A - Keep Shakopee a safe and healthy community where residents can pursue
active and quality lifestyles.
Requested Action
If the Council concurs, it is asked to offer a motion to authorize the payment of$1,500 from the
police department's drug forfeiture fund to the Meth Task Force for anti-drug presentations in the
Shakopee schools for the 2013-2014 school year.
