L # CITY OF SHAKOPEE POLICE DEPARTMENT Memorandum Co,,~~rAPr ,'!( ~r' "~' lj . ~j\ TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator ~ FROM: Dan Hughes, Chief of Police/Emergency Management Director ' SUBJECT: Permission to endorse memorial funds received in memory of the late Sergeant Kenneth Hanel - Retired, and direct them to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County DATE: February 12,2007 INTRODUCTION: Council is asked to consider authorizing the Finance Director to endorse checks written out to the Shakopee Police Department in memory of the late Sergeant Kenneth Hanel - Retired, and allow the checks to be endorsed to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County. BACKGROUND: Sergeant Kenneth Hanel served the City of Shakopee from 1960 to 1986, retiring January 2, 1987. Mr. Mike Hanel, Ken's son, requested that memorials be given to a law enforcement scholarship fund and several checks were made out to the Shakopee Police Department. The Police Department does not have a scholarship fund; however The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County exists, and provides scholarships to law enforcement students who reside within Scott County. Since the checks were made out to the Shakopee Police Department, it is necessary to gain Council authorization to endorse those checks to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County. VISIONING RELATIONSHIP: This action supports: Goal F - Housekeeping item. Strategy 5: Foster community connections ALTERNATIVES 1. Authorize the Finance Director to endorse memorial checks for deposit to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County. 2. Do not authorize the Finance Director to endorse memorial checks for deposit to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County. 3. Table and provide direction to staff. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends alternative one. ACTION REQUESTED: If council concurs, they should by motion, authorize the Finance Director to endorse checks issued in memory of the late Sergeant Kenneth Hanel - Retired, for deposit to The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Scholarship of Scott County.
