CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSENT MEMORANDUM To: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill1 City Administrator From: Sherry Dvorak1 Recreation Supervisor Meeting Date: May 2, 2006 Subject: Acceptance of Donation from Adult Softball Association for Lighting Improvements at Tahpah Park1 Resolution No, 6420 INTRODUCTION City Council is asked to adopt Resolution No. 64201 a resolution of the City of Shakopee1 Minnesota, accepting a donation in the amount of $6142,15 from the Adult Softball Association. BACKGROUND AND. DISCUSSION Between 1983 and approximately 1993, the Shakopee Men's Softball League, Shakopee Women's Softball League and the Shakopee Co-Rec Softball League accessed a per player fee for improvements to Tahpah Park, The funds collected were put into an account at the First National Bank under the nameShakopee Adult Softball Association, During this time frame1 these funds were designated for upgrading of fields, fencing improvements,. bleachers, base pads to all fields, pay telephone service and administrative costs, The funds also paid for the lighting of fields 2 & 3, In approximately, 19921 the league stopped collecting the extra fee and the leftover funds in the account have been untouched and collecting interest since that time, To date1 there is $6142,15 in the account. Lois Weckman, administrator of the account and the past Secretary of the ShakopeeAdult Softball Association,.wishesto donate these funds to the City for the Tahpah Park Re-Construction Project and specifically for the lighting of Field 1 and Field 41 as that was one of the original purposes of the account. The City's donation policy requires a 2/3 vote to accept cash donations over $11000 and donations ofreal property, VISIONING RELATIONSHIP The acceptance of the donation will help ensure the long-term viability of t~e City's park system that serves our residents1 employees and guests, With this in mind1 this action appears to meet the following aspects of the City's vision: Goals: Active and healthy community Vibrant, resilient and stable Financially strong Strategies: Increase use of Park and Recreation Provide high quality services Ensure City's fiscal health REOUESTED ACTION City Council is asked to adopt Resolution No,6420, a resolution of the City of Shakopee, Minnesota, accepting the $6142,15 donation from the Shakopee Adult Softball Association, RESOLUTION NO. 6420 A RESOLUTION OF THECITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA ACCEPTING A DONATION OF $6142.15 FROM THE SHAKOPEE ADULT SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION WHEREAS, on November 6, 2002, the City Council adopted Resolution No, 5794, which established procedure relating to the receipt of gifts and donations by the City; and WHEREAS, Resolution No. 5794 specifies that donations of real property shall be accepted by resolution ofthe City Council, and shall require a two-thirds majority of the Council for acceptance; and WHEREAS, THE SHAKOPEE ADUL T SOFTBALL ASSOCIAITON have generously donated $6,142.15 for the 2006 T ahpah . Park Reconstruction.. Project; and WHEREAS,sucha donation will help improve park facilities and enhance the overall quality of like in Shakopee, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THECITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, that the donation in the amount of $6,142,15 is gratefully accepted; and FURTHER, the $6,142.15 donation shall be used towards the 2006 Tahpah Park Reconstruction Project, which is consistent with the wishes of the donor, FURTHER, the City staff is directed to send a letter to the donor, acknowledging receipt of the gift and expressing the appreciation of the City Council.
