CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSEr~T
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Edward Schwaesdall, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: lncreasing the fleet of Shakopee Fire Department
DATE: April 24th, 2006
Background:
ln 1986 Shakopee acquired the heavy rescue for the Shakopee Fire Department for use in
structure firefighting, vehicle accidents and special teams and a command station.
Shakopee city council approved in December 2005 the purchase of a medium rescue to
replace the heavy rescue.
Relationship to Visioning:
This represents F of the Shakopee strategic vision.
Recommendation:
The Shakopee Fire Department is requesting to council that the 1986 Heavy Rescue be
added to the fleet of the Shakopee Fire Department for use as a Hazardous Materials
Rescue unit and as a mobile command unit for large fire scenes. The cost of increasing
the fleet to allow this unit to be kept would be insurance costs only. The sale of the
Heavy Rescue unit would be estimated at around $3,000. The addition of the Heavy
Rescue would allow Shakopee Fire Department to utilize space in the medium rescue unit
approved by council in December of 2005 to be used for equipment and personnel
hauling instead of having to add a mobile command post inside the apparatus.
Action Required:
lf the Council concurs, it should, by motion, allow the 1986 Heavy Rescue to be kept by
Shakopee Fire Department which would increase the fleet of the fire department by 1
rescue unit.
