CITY OF SHAKO PEE
Memorandum CONSENT
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Special Meeting-Accessibility Workshop
DATE: March 16, 2006
Introduction:
The Council is asked to call for a special meeting to hear a presentation on Accessibility
Issues. The proposed meeting time is 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Monday, April 3, 2006.
Background:
Attached is a memo from Brad Eller ofthe Parks, recreation, and Facilities staff. Mr.
eller has been coordinating the City's response to accessibility issues.
One of the parts of the response plan was that training on how services to the disabled
population would be provided. Mr. Eller has arranged for an individual with national
accreditations to make presentations in Shakopee. Because we are able to "piggyback"
these presentations with others that Mr. McGovern is making in the Twin Cities, there is
a cost savings, but no flexibility on dates.
As shown, members of the City's Boards and Commissions will be invited to attend as
well.
Relationship To Visioning:
This relates to Goal A, "Active and Healthy Community" and Goal B, "high Quality of
Life"
Recommendation:
As more than three Councilmembers in attendance would constitute a public meeting, the
Council should call for a Special Workshop.
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, call for a Special Meeting ofthe Council for
6:30 PM to 8 PM, on Monday, April3rd, in the City Counjcil Chambers.

MEMORANDUM
To: Shakopee City Council, Boards and Commissions
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Brad Eller, Recreation Supervisor
Date: March 16, 2006
Subject: Accessibility Training Invite
You are invited to attend an Accessibility Training Session on Monday, April 3rd, from 6:30 pm -
8:00 pm at City Hall. Mr. John McGovern, a national expert on the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) and accessibility, will be presenting. Mayor John Schmitt and City Administrator Mark
McNeill will be introducing the presentation with information on how this training fits into the
City's visioning plan.
The Monday evening session is designated for City Council, Board, Committee members and the
public to attend. It is the first of three training sessions being offered. Two other sessions offer
flexibility for City employees to attend and will be held on Tuesday, April 4th, from 9:00 am -
10:30 am and from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm. All full time staff must attend, as well as ongoing part
time employees working in areas that require high levels of public interaction.
Attendance at these training sessions fulfills the goals and responsibilities set forth in the 2004
City of Shakopee Transition Plan adopted by City Council. The transition plan acts as a guide
for the City to make positive changes and to remove accessibility barriers in all facilities,
programs and services.
