(5. s-: Memorandum C'~' T : ,~r>~ TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council "'U' Mark McNeill,.City Administrator FROM: Chris Dellwo, Sergeant SUBJECT: Resolution for Southwest Metro Drug Task Force Participation DATE: February 21,2006 Introduction: The Council is asked to consider Resolution #6378, a resolution of the City of Shako pee regarding participation in the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force and to enter a cooperative agreement with the Office of Drug Policy in the MinnesotaDepartment of Public Safety. Background: For the past several years the state and federal governments have encouraged local law enforcement agencies to form regional task forces to investigate drug law violations. Significant sums of federal and state drug enforcement money are distributed to task forces. The Shakopee Police Department has been a member of the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force since its inception and wishes to continue participation in the task force for as long as possible. The Southwest Metro Drug Task Force was successful in securing grant funds from the federal government to partially fund its operating expenses in 2006. The City currently serves as the financial agent of the Task Force and has served in the capacity for several years. Recommendation: Alternative # 1 Action Requested: Offer Resolution #6378, a resolution to enter a cooperative agreement with the Office of Drug Policy in the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for participation in the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force. RESOLUTION NO. 6378 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, REGARDING P ARTICIP ATION IN THE SOUTHWEST METRO DRUG TASK FORCE WHEREAS, The City has participated in the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force since its inception; and WHEREAS, the Task Force has successfully brought about numerous drug convictions; and WHEREAS, each year the City enters into a cooperative agreement in order to continue to participate. WHEREAS, the City currently serves as the financial agent of the Task Force and has served inthat capacity for several years. WHEREAS, in the capacity of the financial agent, the City has entered a cooperative agreement with the Office of Drug Policy to administer federal grant funds that partially fund the Task Force. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, AS FOLLOWS: That the Mayor, City Administrator and City Clerk are hereby are authorized to enter into a cooperative agreement with the Office of Drug Policy in the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for the project entitled Southwest Metro Drug Task Force for the calendar year 2006.
