Cox, City Clerk SUBJECT: Nominations to Boards and Commissions DATE: February 2, 2006 INTRODUCTION: City Council is asked to make nominations to Boards and Commissions to fill expiring terms on February 7,2006. BACKGROUND: Terms on various Boards and Commissions will be expiring on February 28, 2006. According to Council policy, it is appropriate to make nominations to Boards and Commissions at the February 7th City Council meeting. An Interview Committee will then interview the applicants and make recommendations to City Council for appointments at the February 21 8t meeting. The number of terms that are expiring and the names from applications received to date are attached. Should additional applications be received prior to the City Council meeting on February 7th, they will be placed on the Council table. In order to inform the community that the City Council is seeking applicants for Boards and Commissions, the following actions, as outlined in the Guidelines for Boards and Commissions, were taken: 1] Two ads in the local newspaper and one in the Mint , Notice on the cable television government channel 2] 3] Notice on City's web site 4] Notices on bulletin boards: City, County, SPUC, Community Center, and Library 5] Letter to chairs of local organizations 6] Letter to incumbents eligible for reappointment VISIONING RELATIONSHIP: This action supports: Goal A: Active and healthy community. Strategies: 5. Foster community cOlU1ections 6. Provide high quality services RECOMMENDATION: 1. If City Council decides to ask the Park and Recreation Advisory Board and the Environmental Advisory Committee to meet jointly for the months of March, April, and May (if needed) to assess whether or not merging the two boards would result in greater efficiency and effectiveness for the City, staff recommends not making recommendations to these two hoards at this time. Instead, nominations can made in Mayor June, should it be decided to keep both boards. Encumbants, who have submitted an application for re- appointment will be asked to continue to serve until their successor is appointed and qualified. 2. If City Council decides not to ask the Park and Recreation Advisory Board and the Environmental Advisory Committee to meet jointly to assess whether or not to merge the two boards, staff recommends making all of the below nominations.
