CITY OF SHAKO PEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Workshop Date
DATE: December 15,2005
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to establish a workshop to discuss goals and objectives for 2006 -
2007.
BACKGROUND:
With a new City Council, it is important to establish common goals and objectives for
2006, and 2007. One suggestion would be to discuss in more detail what particular
"tasks" are of high priority, so as to meet the long term goals and strategies identified in
the Shakopee Visioning Initiative (assuming that those are adopted by the City Council
elsewhere on the agenda on December 20th).
It is recommended that this be a collaboration between City Council and key staff
members.
I anticipate that the participants will be asked to identify and prioritize common tasks that
would lay the foundation for the City's work over the next two years. We could do this
in a single evening. As an alternative, the Council may wish to have an all day retreat
devoted to this. Either could be lead by an outside facilitator - the last retreat in 2004
was facilitated by Don Salverda.
OTPIONS:
Assuming the Council wishes to do a short term visioning implementation retreat (two
years goals and objectives), the alternates are:
1) Establish a single evening (suggested date: Tuesday, January 25th)
2) Establish an all day retreat - i.e., Saturday, Feb. 4th or 11th
Council should also determine whether an outside facilitator is desired.
RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend that a workshop be established for Tuesday, January 24th, beginning at 6:30
pm. If the Council prefers an outside facilitator, or to devote an entire day to this, it
should so indicate.
ACTION REQUIRED:
The Council should, by motion, establish a workshop to talk about short term (up to two
years) goals and objectives (tasks) for the City of Shakopee.
