SUBJECT: Authorization to Advertise for Public Works Maintenance Operators
DATE: February 1, 2006
Introduction
The City Council is asked to authorize appropriate City staff to begin the hiring process for the
position of Maintenance Operator in the Public Works Department, to include advertising the
position and interviewing qualified candidates.
Background
The 2007 budget for the Public Works Department includes funding for two additional
Maintenance Operator positions - one in the Street Division and the other in the Parks Division.
These additional positions are needed to keep up with the recent growth of the City, which has
resulted in additional streets and parks that need to be maintained. Additionally, there is
currently one vacancy within the Streets Division resulting from a resignation in 2006 and the
decision not to fill the position with a full-time employee during the winter season. Therefore,
we would be seeking to hire a total ofthree new Maintenance Operators. By beginning the
process now, it is staff's goal to be fully staffed before the weather turns wann.
Budget Impact
Funding for all three Maintenance Operator positions was included in the Public Works
Department's 2007 budget.
Relationship to Vision: A fully-staffed Public Works Department allows the City to properly
maintain City streets, sewers and parks, thereby contributing to a High Quality of Life for
residents (Goal B).
Requested Action:
If it concurs, the Council should offer a motion to authorize appropriate staff to begin the hiring
process for three Maintenance Operators in the Public Works Department, to include advertising
the position and interviewing qualified candidates.
