INTRODUCTION
The Police Department is seeking council approval to use DWI forfeiture funds for the
purchase of integrated lighting systems and slings for department long guns and officer's
handguns.
BACKGROUND
Equipping the department's long guns with slings and integrated lighting system will
increase officer safety. Often these weapons are used in no light/low light environments.
These are weapons that occupy both the user's hands, making it almost impossible to
effectively hold a flashlight along with the weapon in a stressful, tactical situation. These
lighting systems integrate a light into the weapon's forearm and allow the officer greater
weapon security and safety in no light/low light environments. Adding slings to the long
guns increases retention while allowing the user to transition to hislher sidearm if
necessary. The recently purchased Glock handguns have an integrated accessory rail
where the flashlight easily mounts. The benefits of a handgun mounted light are the same
as weapon lights on the long guns.
