Memorandum

Re: Recommend Council to increase pay scales for Shakopee Fire Department
Officers.
Introduefion:
The Shakopee Fire Department requests at this time to recommend City Council to
approve the annual pay be raised for the Shakopee Fire Department Officers. Fire Chief
$8,000, 1st and 2nd Assistant Chiefs $4,500 each, Captain IfTraining Officer $5,000,
Captain 2 $3,000, Captain 3 $2,000, Captain 4 $2,000, Captain 5 $1,500, Captain 6
$1,500, Engineer $2,800, Assistant Engineer $2,200, 2nd Assistant Engineer $1,200.
Background:
The Shakopee Fire Department has not had pay raises since 2004. Before that date the
pay of firefighters began in 1979 and has gone from $5,500 for 6 paid officer positions to
$38,200 in 2006, if this is approved, for 12 paid officer positions. As of2005 the 12
officer positions receive $24,900 for their duties. The Chief Officer puts in
approximately 20 hours of administrative duties a week with other officers putting in 5 to
10 hours a week of administrative duties that does not include the running of fire calls to
which our department is averaging around 500 calls a year. This is a significant raise
from 2005-2006 due to more work for the officers of the department due to the growth of
the city and to get the pay in line for the hiring of a full time Chief in 2007. Also this is
being requested at this time due to the department deciding to go to 2 year terms for all
officers starting January I, 2006, which is a change in past years of officers only serving
1 year terms previously.
The budget for the past 4 years for staffing has been
2002 budgeted 177,000 used 165,014;
2003 budgeted 174,000 used 158,425;
2004 budgeted 209,590 used 213,541;
2005 budgeted 220,500 used 220,671 as of 10/31;
2006 budgeted 256,790
Budget Impad:
This will have an impact of$13,300 increase to the Fire Department Budget.
Action Requested:
At this time the Shakopee Fire Department recommends to council to approve the pay
raises for the Officers of the department. This raise will take effect January 1,2006 for all
officers.
