15.F.3.
CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum CONSENT
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Workshop Meeting Date - VisioninglGreenways Discussion
DATE: September 30, 2005
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to establish a date at which major issues can be discussed - the draft
strategic visioning results, and a discussion of greenway corridors.
BACKGROUND:
After more than seventeen months of study, the preliminary findings and
recommendations of the Strategic Visioning Initiative will soon be ready for discussion.
While the draft is still being reviewed by the Steering Committee, it has been suggested
that in addition to the City Council, other parties representing some of the many
components of strategic visioning be invited to attend the "unveiling" of the draft
findings discussion. Those would include the City's advisory boards and commissions,
and SPUc. We would also invite the two County Commissioners that represent Scott
County, as well as members ofthe public.
In addition to the Visioning discussion, there is a need for the City Council to have a joint
meeting with the Park and Recreation Advisory Board, and Environmental Advisory
Commission regarding a discussion of greenway corridors in Shakopee. If that
discussion could be held the same evening as the draft visioning meeting, it would be an
efficient use of time.
However, we anticipate that the discussion time needed for the greenway corridor item
would be one hour; depending upon the amount of discussion, the presentation of the
Visioning draft could take two hours or more. In other words, if both issues are discussed
during the same meeting, it could be a long evening. The alternative would be to
schedule two evenings.
RECOMMENDATION:
Attached are calendars for October and November. Unless too many members of the
Steering Committee are unavailable that evening, we recommend a joint meeting to
discuss the Strategic Visioning Initiative, and Shakopee greenways, at 6:30 pm on
November 14th.,
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, designate a workshop to discuss Visioning
and Greenways, to convene at 6:30 PM on Monday, November 14,2005.
