SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Police Records Technician - Darlene
Bjerketvedt
DATE: August 30, 2005
INTRODUCTION:
The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Darlene Bjerketvedt as a
probationary records technician.
BACKGROUND:
Currently the police department has two vacant records technician positions. A new
position was included in the 2005 police budget and the second vacancy was created
through retirement. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary
testing that created the Records Technician eligible register. The following names are
the top two candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by
the Police Civil Service Commission.

. Katie Korndner
Although, the Civil Service statue requires the Commission to adopt rules for
certification of three names to the appointing authority (City Council), an opinion from
the city attorney allows the appointment with Council approval.
Staff recommends that Darlene Bjerketvedt be hired at Step E of Grade Level 3 of the
2005 City Pay Plan.
BUDGET IMP ACT:
Funds exist in the Police Department budget for this position.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Authorize the hire.
2. Do not authorize the hire.
3. Table and provide direction to staff.
RECOMMENDATION:
Altemative #1. Staffrecommends Council authorize the hiring Darlene Bjerketvedt as
probationary records technician.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary
records technician Darlene Bjerketvedt at Step E of Grade Level 3 in the 2005 City Pay
Plan, at an hourly rate of$15.52, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-
employment medical and psychological examinations.
