HomeMy WebLinkAbout15.E.7. Telecommunications Coordinator Appointment ISlE 7. CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum CONSENT TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Telecommunications Coordinator Appointment DATE: June 28, 2005 INTRODUCTION: The Council is asked to approve the hiring of John Peterson as Telecommunications Coordinator for the City of Shakopee. BACKGROUND: Former Assistant to the City Administrator Tracy Schaefer left employment with the City in September, 2004. Since February, 2005, Telecommunications support services have been provided by Ms. Schaefer through her new employer, Bradley & Guzzetta. The Telecommunications Advisory Commission and staff have subsequently researched what staffing should be recommended to the City Council. Rather than a Television Production Specialist as had been the full time staffing before (augmented by the Assistant to the City Administrator position), a new position was recommended, and approved to be advertised. This Telecommunications Coordinator position is less "hands on" in terms oftaping meetings and doing actual production work, although that would still be part of the job description. It is intended that the Coordinator position would do the technical research and support for the Telecommunications Advisory Commission, and would eliminate the need for the Bradley and Guzetta support (with the exception of Institutional Network and Cable franchising issues-those would continue to be billed on a per hour, as needed basis.) On June 30th, four finalist candidates were interviewed by an interview panel made up of City staff, the Telecommunications Director from the City of Lakeville, and the Chair of the Shakopee Telecommunications Advisory Commission. As a result, the candidate that is being recommended for hire is John Peterson of Montrose, MN. He is currently employed as Assistant Station Manager for the Lake Minnetonka Communication Commission. He would be hired at Step 1 of Grade 6 ($42,953), and it is recommended that he start with one week of vacation "on the books". Anticipating that the background check and physical exams are completed successfully, he would start July 25,2005. BUDGET IMPACT: Funding for this position comes from the Telecommunications Fund. RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that John Peterson be hired as Telecommunications Coordinator for the City of Shakopee, contingent upon the successful completion of background and physical exams, and would be at Step I of Grade 6. He would start with one week of vacation on the books. ACTION REQUIRED: If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize the hiring of John Peterson as Telecommunications Coordinator for the City of Shakopee, at Step 1 of Grade 6 ($42,953) with one week of vacation on the books, conditioned upon passage of a background check, and pre-employment physical examination. - M~ Mark McNeill City Administrator MM:th CC: Marilyn Remer Kris Wilson Telecommunications Advisory Commission
