CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum CASE LOG NO.: NA COr~SENT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: R. Michael Leek, Community Development Director SUBJECT: Request by Fire Department for Waiver of Demolition Permit Fees MEETING DATE: June 21,2005 INTRODUCTION: Recently the City's Fire Chief and Fire Department Training Officer were informed that demolition permits should be submitted and reviewed for structures which the department will be using for training purposes. By the attached communication, they have asked that the City Council waived the permit fees in such cases. Given the training value for City firefighters, and thus to the residents ofthe City, it appears appropriate to waive the demolition permit fees in such cases. ACTION REQUESTED: Offer and pass a motion waiving demolition permit fees for all structures in which the Shakopee Fire Department is involved in for the purposes of providing fire training. &/~ ~.. ::f,':..' .' /----, - . 2//~?e.L~~ R. Obtaining these "to be demolished" structures is becoming more difficult for many reasons. The training we perform in these structures provides us the best possible fire training available. This cannot be fully reproduced or simulated in any other way_ We obtain significant training value from each one of these opportunities. We ask that the City of Shakopee waive the fee for the Demolition Permit in the instances where the Shakopee Fire Department is involved and will obtain significant training value. This will help us secure these training opportunities in the future. Thanks much, Ed Schwaesdall Shakopee Fire Chief 612-490-9500 Dave Judd Shakopee Fire Department Captain 1, Training Officer 612-490-9503 6/1312005
