CITY OF SHAKOPEE IS: IJ. 3:-
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council CONSENT
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Andrea Weber, Park and Landscape Designer
Date: June 21, 2005
Subject: Greenfield West Playground Equipment
INTRODUCTION
The City Council is being asked to approve the purchase the playground Equipment for
Greenfiield West Neighborhood Park.
BACKGROUND
There was $100,000.00 allocated in the Greenfiield West Neighborhood Park budget for
playground equipment in three separate play areas. The play features were intended to
serve all ages, but the largest area was planned for 5-12 year old children ($50,000.00).
There is also a 2-5 year old area with a linked sand play area ($20,000.00), and a
challenge play and fitness area (30,000.00).
The play equipment quotes were chosen at the third neighborhood meeting held on
January 20, 2005, and recommended by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in
February. The quotes were selected from a total of six proposals for each area. Each
play area will have equipment from a different vendor.
I have contacted the representatives to confirm that they will still honor their original
quotes, all of which have expired. I also informed them that my current estimate for
installation, (which is not confirmed by the contractor), is in late August. All of the
representatives have confirmed that they will still honor their quotes.
I have requested two changes to the original quotes. One change is that the original
shade structure that was proposed for the sand play area was changed to a different
style of structure at the request of staff for maintenance and durability reasons. The
replacement is included in the confirmed quote. A second change is that I have removed
benches from within the play equipment quotes and added rubber wear mats under slide
exits to reduce maintenance to the wood fiber surface. I chose to remove the benches
so that I could have a single bench style throughout the entire park site. Benches are
accounted for in the overall park construction bid which was approved by the City
Council on June tho All of the play areas are within budget
REQUESTED ACTION
If City Council concurs, it should by motion authorize the purchase of the following
playground equipment:
1. Play equipment from Midwest Recreation for the 2-5 age and Sand Play areas
for a total of $18,231.78.
.
2. Play Equipment from Webber Recreation for the 5-12 age play area for a total of
$49,944,94.
3. Play equipment from Flanagan Sales for the fitness and challenge play area for a
total of $30,000.00.
