Police Department Memorandum CONSENT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Bob Forberg, Sergeant ~F SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Scott Weiers DATE: March 11, 2004 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire a vacant police officer position. BACKGROUND: The Shakopee Police Department currently has eight vacant police officers positions. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that created the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top three candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil Service Commission. . Carl Bock . Derek Nordtvedt . Scott Weiers Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. BUDGET IMPACT: Funds exist in the police department's budget and there is a need to fill the vacant police officer position. The position will be compensated at an entry-level rate. The current labor agreement establishes $3,358.58 per month as Step 1 wage for a probationary police officer. A portion of his wage will be paid from a Universal Hiring Grant approved by City Council in 2003. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Do not authorize the hire. 2. Authorize hire. 3. Table and provide staff with additional direction. RECOMMENDATION: Alternative #2. Staff recommends Council authorize the hiring Scott Weiers as a probationary police officer. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of Scott Weiers as a probationary police officer, at Step 1 of the current labor contract, at a monthly rate of $3,358.58, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment medical and psychological examinations.
