SUBJECT: Purchase of an Aerator for the Parks Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department (E)
Action Sought
Move to authorize the purchase of one new aerator from MTI Distributing for the price of $29,305.92. The funding
to be expended from the Capital Equipment Internal Service Fund.
Background
Public Works has identified a need in the 2013 Capital Equipment Budget to purchase an aerator for the Park
Maintenance Division. With the heavy use of all our athletic fields, soil compaction is the number one reason for
poor turf quality. Aeration every fall will alleviate the compaction and allow air, water and fertilizer to reach the
root zone to promote a healthier turf and safer playing surface.
Public Works is recommending to purchase an Aerator from MTI Distributing for the price of $29,305.92. The
Toro ProCore 1298 will have a three point hitch for mounting to our existing tractors and have a 98 inch aeration
width. This will allow us to aerate 2.3 acres per hour with improved turf penitration and better resulting root growth.
Staff will again be utilizing our National IPA Contract for this purchase, this will give us a $250.00 savings vs. the
State Contract Pricing. Staff had budgeted $31,000.00 for this purchase in the 2013 Capital Equipment Budget.
Recommendation
Staff recommends this purchase.
Budget Impact
Funding will come from the Capital Equipment Internal Service Fund.
